How do I move / transfer my Decipher TextMessage history to a new computer?

All of the Decipher TextMessage saved data is stored independently from the program, in your account user data section. This article will discuss how to find that “Decipher Media” folder of data so you can copy it to a USB thumb drive (or however you want to copy/move the files), and where to put it on the new machine.

Please note that copying the “Decipher Media” folder will overwrite any new data on your new computer, so you’ll want to run Decipher TextMessage again on your new computer before making a new backup.

Finding the data on Windows:

  • Windows 8 and 10: In the Windows search bar type %appdata% (with the percents) and press return/enter. A file browser window will open to the Application Data folder.
  • Windows 7, Vista, XP: From the start menu, select Run. In the run box, type %appdata% (with the percents) and press return/enter. A file browser window will open to the Application Data folder.
  • You should see a Decipher Media folder in the Application Data folder, which contains your sms history database and all of the photo attachments.   We want that whole folder.

Finding the data on Mac:

  • Open Finder, and select the “Go” menu at the top of the screen. Hold the Option key, and select the “Library” menu option from the Go menu. (On OSX Lion and above, Library will only appear with the Option key held.)
  • From Library, navigate to Application Support.
  • Inside the Application Support folder, there will be a folder named Decipher Media, which contains your sms history database and all of the photo attachments.  We want to copy that whole folder.

Where to put the data on a new machine running Windows:

  • Similar to where we pulled the data from, we need to find the location of your user data folder on your new machine.
  • Windows 8 and 10: In the Windows search bar type %appdata% (with the percents) and press return/enter. A file browser window will open to the Application Data folder.=
  • Windows 7, Vista, XP: From the start menu, select Run. In the run box, type %appdata% (with the percents) and press return/enter. A file browser window will open to the Application Data folder.
  • Copy your “Decipher Media” folder from the old computer into Application Data here. Overwrite any existing “Decipher Media” folder with the old one.
  • Run Decipher TextMessage once more to pick-up any new information before making a new backup. If you don’t see the newer information in Decipher TextMessage, uncheck “Skip Old Backups” in the Preferences menu of Decipher TextMessage, close Decipher TextMessage, and run it one more time. You can then re-check “Skip Old Backups” to speed up the program in future launches.
