iPhone Text Tones are All Silent

This morning my husband's iPhone 6 Plus stopped playing text tones. The ringer worked fine, but all of the text tones just vibrated, even while trying to change the tone in the Settings app (built in and custom ringtones.) Here's how we fixed it:

  • First try turning off Bluetooth, and then turn it back on. (See Disconnect from Bluetooth accessories from Apple Support.) I see this work a lot if the sounds stopped because the iPhone still thinks it's connected to your car or headphones.

  • Restart the iPhone if you haven't tried that already.

  • In the settings app, go to Sounds, and then Ring Tone. Click around to a few different ring tone options, and then select your usual ring tone again.

  • In the settings app, go to Sounds, and then Text Tone. If the tone sounds now when selecting different ones, it should be working now. If not, keep going.

  • Back up one screen in the Settings app to go to the sound menu. Turn off "change with buttons" if it's on. Slide the volume slider just above that all the way down, and then back up to your normal ringer volume level. Turn back on "change with buttons." Reboot the iPhone.

  • The sounds should be working now, check again by trying to select a text tone in Settings. In the settings app, go to Sounds, and then Text Tone. If you can hear the tone now when selecting different text tones, select your regular tone and ask someone to text you to do the final test!

If these didn't work for you, leave us a comment with your specific situation, and we will help as best we can!

Update July 12, 2017: After all of the great comments from our readers, we have two more great suggestions to try if your text and other notification sounds aren't working.

Update March 29th, 2016: If all of your sound (text alerts, phone rings, keyboard clicks) cuts out randomly at times, and you have a bluetooth-enabled car, you might find our new post on this topic helpful!

Try this:
I did each of these steps exactly. Didn't work. Finally went to Sounds > Ring Tone (my ringtone was working just fine, but I wanted to verify again that my phone had sound). I randomly hit 5-6 ringtone sounds - all worked, then set it back to my default. Went back to Sounds > Text Tones and text tones immediately worked.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi Dan,

Interesting fix. I wonder if the original underlying cause was a buggy setting of which text tone to use. I will update the post shortly with your suggestion!

I have tried all of the below: blue tooth setting, volume button , hide alert settings and rebooting a number of times, but still no text alert sounds or screen notifications. I can change the text tone and hear the sound while changing, but nothing happens with a real text
It's quite inconvenient.

Hi Peggy,

The no screen notification is an interesting piece of the puzzle. Can you go into the Settings app, then click Notifications, and Messages? Let's check to see if "Allow Notifications" is on, and if the different types of alerts are turned on (Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners). Also see if there is a sound is selected there.

I finally fixed mine! It was my new otterbox cover. I had to take it off and then I could see that the mute switch had been turned on. I couldn't see it with the case on. Taa Da!

This morning all alerts went silent except for phone calls. iPhone 6 would vibrate but no audio alerts.

Followed all of your suggestions for fixing and still did not work. Read one of the comments about turning off Bluetooth and then audio alerts came back. Turned BT back on and still works. Weird..

Hi Mo,

I'm glad toggling the bluetooth on and off fixed the problem. I'm going to update the post to make this suggestion easier to find in the article text.

Do you by chance connect your phone to a BT enabled car? We've definitely seen the BT sound connection stay connected even after turning off and leaving the car for some models. We wrote it up here in case you're interested. https://deciphertools.com/b...

I did all reboots, checked all were on correctly multiple times..and my iPhone 6 still does not alert on Text coming into my phone.. Come on Apple fix this ! Seems every time there is an update something else stops working. Is this a coincidence or a way to increase sales.. you are pissing off long time customers who about ready to switch phones. Okay after just reading multiple people with same problem on internet just found a fix, go to Bluetooth turn off , then try going to the person who sent you the text that did not sound, click on the top of their info you will see audio, facetime and info.. I clicked on info and hide alerts was on .. don't know how it was clicked on as I never did that , but turn it off and it should work.. come on Apple if it isn't broke stop updating and changing settings to make our life harder. Never had issues prior on all our phones!

I definitely understand the frustration with iOS Messages alerts :) I'm glad to hear you were able to find that the Hide Alerts was accidentally on for that contact and get it fixed!

I have to have Bluetooth turned Off for the text/message sound to work. But...I need to have Bluetooth turned ON for my iwatch. Need a fix / update Apple.

      Hi Kevin,

When bluetooth is on for your Apple Watch, do you get the sounds/notifications to your watch? You will not hear the phone notifications while the screen is off, but the notifications should come to your Apple Watch instead.

When you're actively using your iPhone though, you should get the notification sounds on your iPhone.

Hi Kelly, I do get the notification on my watch, BUT it is not an audible alert. My sound and haptic on watch is turned on. It's important that I get an audible alert so I can respond to customers immediately. I've never had this issue in the past until recently I missed/seen too late messages and lost customers.

You may want to bring the phone and watch into an Apple Store so they can take a look. It could be a bug with the watch pairing. But, some easier things to try first (apologies if you've tried these already, but I have to cover my bases.):

          1. Reboot the Apple Watch.
          2. In the Settings app on the watch itself > Sounds & Haptics, ensure silent mode is off, ensure alert volume is not all the way down. If Volume limit is set, make sure it's not all the way down.
          3. Slide up from the watch face on the Watch. Make sure none of the moon (do not disturb), masks (theatre mode), and bell (mute) are activated.

Hi Kelly, I did reboot the watch. All settings on watch are good as you suggested.

If you open the Watch app on the iPhone > Sound and Haptics, and adjust the alert volume, do you hear the sounds on the watch then?

I hear the haptic "knock" sound, but no ring sound. I only hear the haptc "knock" sound when when adjusting the sound and haptic. Should I hear a ring tone when touching the sound?

                • Kelly HW

                  Kelly HW September 9, 2019

The knock sound is what you would hear for that slider. Hmm, so the sound is working. This may indeed be a job for the Apple Store if you're nearby one. If you do go, and they solve it, I'd love to hear what the solution was (or if an unpair and repair was needed!)

I did all of above about three times. Finally shut off Bluetooth and sound came back on. So choice of Bluetooth or not when driving.

      Hi Moe,

You're getting sounds for WhatsApp and Messages, but nothing else? Is that correct?

      • Moe August 8, 2019

Yes you are right, I am getting sound notifications only from these two. For all other Apps there is no sound but other type of notifications like banner etc are coming

Interesting. Before we dive in too deep, can you open the Settings app and go to Notifications, and tap an app that you want sound notifications for, and then see if Sounds is turned on for that app's notification settings?

            Yes they are on
