How do I move / transfer my Decipher TextMessage history to a new computer?
No ratings yet.The saved history and data contained within Decipher TextMessage is stored on your computer. The instructions below will show you how to locate this “Decipher Media” folder and copy it over to another machine.
- You’ll want to close Decipher TexMessage before beginning this process.
- Copying over your Decipher TextMessage history to another computer will overwrite any existing history should there happen to already be a copy of Decipher TextMessage on the destination machine.
Finding your Decipher TextMessage data on Windows:
- Windows 8, 10, and 11: In the Windows search bar type
%appdata%
(with the percents) and press return/enter. A file browser window will open to the Application Data folder.
Windows 7, Vista, XP: From the start menu, select Run. In the run box, type%appdata%
(with the percents) and press return/enter. A file browser window will open to the Application Data folder. - You should see a Decipher Media folder in the Application Data folder, which contains your sms history database and all of the photo attachments. We want that whole folder.
Finding your Decipher TextMessage data on Mac:
- Open Finder, and select the “Go” menu at the top of the screen. Hold the Option key, and select the “Library” menu option from the Go menu. (On OSX Lion and above, Library will only appear with the Option key held.)
- From Library, navigate to Application Support.
- Inside the Application Support folder, there will be a folder named Decipher Media, which contains your sms history database and all of the photo attachments. We want to copy that whole folder.
Where to put the data on a new machine running Windows:
Similar to where we pulled the data from, we need to find the location of your user data folder on your new machine.

Once again, please make sure Decipher TextMessage is closed on the new machine before copying the data.

- Run Decipher TextMessage once more to pick-up any new information before making a new backup. If you don't see the newer information in Decipher TextMessage, uncheck “Skip Old Backups” in the Preferences menu of Decipher TextMessage, close Decipher TextMessage, and run it one more time. You can then re-check “Skip Old Backups” to speed up the program in future launches.
