Decipher TextMessage doesn't recognize my phone in the left-hand column of the program.

If you just downloaded and installed Decipher TextMessage and you don't see your iPhone in the left hand column of the software, here is what to do:

  1. The first thing you should do is force a new backup of your device via iTunes by plugging your iPhone into your computer. This is different than just syncing! Once you force a backup of your iPhone you will then be able to save your iPhone text messages. Many times iTunes won't always complete a backup on the first try so we recommend you do it a second time to ensure you've actually backed up.   2. If backing up a second time did not solve the issue, select "Preferences" in the Decipher TextMessage menu and then "un-check" the Hide Empty Devices option. Then restart the program and see if your device appears.

  3. If you're being prompted for a backup password in Decipher TextMessage, then your backup is encrypted and the password is needed to read any of the data within your iPhone backup. If you don't know the backup password, then this article may be helpful to help you remember it!

  4. Click the "Check for Updates" button at the top of the Decipher TextMessage window to ensure you're running the latest version, compatible with the latest changes to iTunes, iOS, macOS, and Windows.
